Tchoodi: Fulani Lip Tattoo Culture

Most of us are aware that a "lip tattoo" is used to enhance the color of our lips. Here's an example of a lip tattoo as a sign of maturation.

When Fulani women are ready to marry, they tattoo their lips and sometimes their gums in a custom known as "Tchoodi." Not only was it a marker of their puberty, but it was also a symbol of their bravery and strength. It's a body modification that only women can receive and do for the Fuli people of Mali. The large finished circle around their lips draws attention to their teeth and bright smile, signaling to men that they are ready to marry.

In today's times, lip tattoo is a procedure that women want to have to have a permanent lip tattoo that will last up to 3-5 years. But since ancient times, lip tattooing has been done in a traditional manner, not only for cosmetic purposes.
